LPA to bring moderate to intense rains over Bicol on Sunday, Monday

Bicol will experience moderate to heavy rains on Saturday while some parts of the region will experience heavy to intense rains on Monday due to the low pressure area (LPA) affecting the country.

This is according to the weather advisory released by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Saturday evening, Aug. 31.

While the rains may affect the entire region on Sunday, the heavy to intense rain will be mostly felt in the provinces of Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes, according to state meteorologists.

Moderate rains mean that the rate of rainfall in the area is 2.5 to 7.5 millimeters per hour. Heavy rains mean that the rate of rainfall in an area is more than 7.5 to 15 millimeters per hour. Intense rains mean 15 to 30 millimeters of rainfall per hour.

The weather agency also warned areas in hazard zones that these rainfalls may cause floods and landslides.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely,” according to Pagasa. “The public and disaster risk reduction and management officers concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property.”

Meanwhile, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has been warning areas near Mayon Volcano that lahars may form during heavy and prolonged rainfall.

The LPA was last seen at 205 kilometers east of Borongan City, Northern Samar at 3 a.m., according to Pagasa’s 5 a.m. weather forecast.
